The importance and impact of widening participation in medicine
This session will cover the why WP work in medicine is needed and how it benefits society in the long run, which WP programmes are available to those wishing to enter medical school at undergraduate and postgraduate level, what support is available to WP students while at medical school and after graduation and what the current best practice guidelines are on WP work.

Amina Ismael Abib
Amina is a 3rd year medical student, and currently the secretary for the NMSWP committee.

Dr Charlotte Aunty
I am a recent graduate from the University of Manchester, currently working as an FY1 in Nottingham. I spent more time doing local Widening Participation work in medical school than I did studying medicine so I’m really excited to be continuing this work at a national level now!

SWAMS: Our Year of Firsts
The aim of this session is to talk about our first year of setting up a WAMS group – including the specific challenges we faced and how we overcame them – to help other students troubleshoot their WAMS work. We will run through the highlights of the year, what we have learnt from the process and allow delegates to ask us their questions about setting up their own WAMS.

John Harvey
I’m one of the Co-Presidents of SWAMS, and a student on the graduate entry course at Sheffield. I previously studied Biomedical Science, Neuroscience, and worked in clinical research. From a ‘WP’ background myself, I am passionate about breaking down the barriers to medicine that students from WP backgrounds often face. Since we founded SWAMS in 2019, I have led and worked on a number of projects, and am especially looking forward to the roll out of our mentoring scheme later this year.

Zoe Rubins
I’m one of the current Co-Presidents for Sheffield WAMS, which we have been working hard to set up over the past year! I am really passionate about equalising opportunities in medicine and really enjoy the space that SWAMS gives us to share our experiences and support students. Sheffield is such a supportive community, with a really strong sense of belonging, which I hope to share with more and more people. Aside from Medicine I love cooking and travelling and aim to combine these with my career in the future.

Rebecca Cooper
I am currently in my fourth year (intercalating) at medical school and I am really passionate about increasing the number of successful WP applicants into medicine. I came from a WP background myself and was a member of an outreach scheme which really did encourage me to apply to medicine and convince me that I was capable of succeeding. I love being a part of the WAMS committee here at Sheffield because it helps me share my experiences and reach people in similar situations and hopefully give them the advice and encouragement that they need.

Mbache Kambele
I’m currently in my 3rd Year of Medical School after taking a gap year. I am originally from Sheffield and stayed in Sheffield for Medical school. I come from a WP background and I am really passionate about helping students from WP background get into medical school. Diversity within medicine is something that needs to be improved and I am excited about helping encourage WP students to apply for medicine and show them they also can get in and succeed. My main aims are to raise confidence with regards to applying to medical school and give students first hand insight into being a medical student. Outside of medicine, I am on a Afrodance committee, I enjoy cooking and playing badminton. I plan to continue these activities throughout my medical career.
